Our Team



Dan Sampson, Principal of Upcountry Group, started in real estate at the early age of 19 and has been immersed in asset management, construction and land development for over 25 years. Dan directs real estate strategy including development, asset repositioning and portfolio management. Since 2005 Upcountry has been involved in the successful acquisition and divestment of more than 700 commercial and residential units totaling over $160,000,000 in major Western Canadian markets.

Prior to Upcountry, Dan was a builder and developer of high end single family homes and building lots. In 1996, Dan won BC Hydro’s Power Smart Builder of the Year Award.

A strategic leader, Dan is passionately involved in My Own Space Housing Society and is guiding it’s pursuit of social housing amenities on Vancouver’s North Shore. He is Past Chair of the Board of Variance for his local municipality.

Focused on living a full, healthy and balanced life while giving back to the community, Dan is a Marine Rescue Specialist for the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCM-SAR) and has been coaching hockey at Hollyburn Country Club for the past 8 years.
An avid nature seeker, Dan spends his spare time with his wonderful wife and three vibrant sons skiing in the mountains or boating in the Pacific Northwest.

Dan holds a BBA in Marketing from Mt. St. Vincent University in Halifax N.S.


Mike Cunning, Principal and co-founder of UPCOUNTRY, oversees day to day operations, including asset management, acquisitions and dispositions. He provides strategic direction to UPCOUNTRY’s commercial real estate business in BC and Alberta. A former real estate broker, he has over a decade of experience in the industry.

Mike is also a director of UPCOUNTRY’s subsidiary, Miracle Springs, an aquaculture investment corporation, and LVC Capital Inc., a private mortgage lender.

A Calgary native, he moved to BC in 1995 obtaining a BA in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia (1999) as well as a Diploma in Urban Land Economics (2005).

He is actively involved in the community and volunteers with North Shore units of Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR).

Mike spends his free time on board his boat, The Bottom Line , in pursuit of Pacific Salmon to share with his wife and three children.


Joelle brings over fifteen years of commercial real estate experience to the UPCOUNTRY team. Prior to joining UPCOUNTRY, Joelle spent five years with Colliers International as part of the National Investment Team, where she was directly involved with investment sales transactions totaling over $700M. It was during this time she earned her CFA charter. Joelle’s experience in investment brokerage has afforded her the ability to clearly identify and strategically work through both the qualitative and quantitative elements of any real estate investment opportunity.

Her responsibilities at UPCOUNTRY include sourcing and underwriting new investment opportunities, the execution of a respective project’s investment strategy, working with current and prospective investors, and providing strategic guidance to the company. Since joining the company in April 2011, she has sourced, negotiated, underwritten, and closed $70 million worth of industrial and office properties for UPCOUNTRY.
